Hooe Point Sailing Club Spring 2010 News Letter

Welcome to the new sailing season, let’s hope the weather is going to be better this year giving us the opportunity to use our vessels as often as possible.  Having been a past committee member, for I don’t know how many years, I have seen the club move forward in leaps and bounds.  Now as your new commodore, I would like to continue to see the club grow stronger and stronger and involve all members in as many activities as possible over the next few years.  There were a number of issues brought up at the AGM, which the committee will look at over the next few months.  However, to do this we need a starting point.  For me, I have thought about this long and hard and think that the best way forward is to find out what you, as members, want.  I have, therefore, compiled a questionnaire, which I would very much appreciate you spending a few minutes of your time to complete and return.  Your views are important in keeping the club active and moving on.  I am not saying that the results will be instantaneous, as it will take some time to collate the information and put together an action plan.  I would hope to have the results available by the time the next newsletter is circulated.  I am asking that you place your name on the questionnaire so I can provide personal feedback to an individual where necessary, however you can return the questionnaire anonymously if you prefer.

We have already organised some on water events, for this year, the first, being the Hooe Point Grand cruise to Fowey, on Saturday 22 May and home again on Sunday 23 May 2010.  The second trip should be to Salcombe or Fowey on Saturday 31st July and return on Sunday 1st August 2010.  All club members are invited to attend, this is not a race but a cruise, I actively encourage our motor boat owners to join in and have fun.

Please keep your eyes on the website for other details of what is happening at the club during the year.

To finish with I ask you all for your support during the next few years. I will endeavour to serve you all to the best of my ability through what may be an interesting time.

Mark.

 Dinghy and Cruiser racing.

 Welcome to the 2010 season.

The pursuit yacht racing is being held on Tuesday evenings at 1900hrs. Come along and have a go its good fun and not too serious, or just watch the action from Mount Batten pier.

If you haven't a yacht or haven't a crew, why don't you put your name and contact details on the club house board or see a committee member.

Dinghy racing is being held on Monday evenings 1900hr start. Participants and spectators always welcomed.  As it is usually around the buoys by the club house, you can always come down to check out the competition, get a taster of dinghy sailing or just to socialise.

As a special event this year, the club have organised a dinghy weekend, named the Alan Pitt Weekend to honour our past commodore. In the spirit of full participation the club are hoping other civil service clubs and Port of Plymouth clubs will join us to make this a great weekend of dinghy sailing Alan would have been proud of.

The date for this weekend 12th and 13th June.

Other planned events are the regatta 17th and 18th July.

Hopefully, this year the weather gods will give us a good summer!

Website News

Thank you for those who have commented about the web site. I hope that it is proving useful and easy to use to all our members who access it. I do my best to keep it up to date on at least a weekly basis if not a daily basis if I get the chance. The website is only as good as the information that I receive, whether it’s from the committee, a member or I have seen it on the white board in the club. The more I get the more I can put on it but it has to be related to the club and its members. If you want to see something that you want on the website that maybe of use then please feel free to email me and ask if it’s possible. If you know of any important calendar dates that members might like to know then please contact me so I can post on the web site. I am hoping to change it again in the future for a more up to date look and have a members only area which you can sign into.

Site

Craning-in and the pre season Work Party were both successfully accomplished. The Portacabin was completely redecorated inside.  Many thanks to all that took part. It has to be said that it is the same relatively few members that turn up on these occasions and do all the work required. It would be good to see more members involved.

The workboat is ashore and going through a thorough overhaul. When Jim has finished it will be the smartest workboat in the Port of Plymouth!

There have been a number of new members joining the club recently and storage next winter will be at a premium.

If you are parking on site please do so with consideration for other members and anyone who may want to move a dinghy or boat near where you are parked.   If you do have to block a boat, or another car, in then please leave your keys in the cupboard under the counter in the Club House.

Moorings

Thanks to a good turnout of helping hands all the required work was successfully carried out in the series of work parties in February, so a big thank you to all those who turned up to help with the hard work.

The deep-water work party were given an alternative view of the new moorings officer when he volunteered to dust off his SCUBA equipment and don it to try & salvage a dropped catenary chain. (No Names Mentioned)  All looked promising as he was dragged out into position by the club workboat after confidently announcing that it was only a 10-minute job. However after around 50 minutes of comprehensive searching in near zero visibility in which the only thing found was an interesting specimen of starfish defeat was finally admitted, and a new chain & weight were prepared and positioned.

The moral of the story mainly being that the mud keeps its secrets well, so be careful what you drop out there.

On a more serious note can I just remind everyone that the spreader ropes on each mooring should be kept to the length of your boat, without any excessive slack which can cause excessive movement of each trot.

Thank You

Andy Mawe

PPSA News

The following information was recently circulated at a PPSA meeting.

It is now possible to dispose of out-of-date pyrotechnics via our local Coastguard MRCC at Brixham.  Members will need to phone ahead and make an appointment to drop expired pyros off in Brixham.  The MRCC will need to know the number, age, condition and type being delivered.  They will only accept out of date pyros from recreational water users.
